Automatic Text Analysis of Pre-Election Communication by Political Parties

Posted on 2025-10-082025-10-07

Parliamentary elections took place in the Czech Republic last Friday and Saturday. For Geneea, this was an important period — since 2020, we’ve been actively involved in reporting election results. For the Czech News Agency (ČTK), we automatically and in real time generate articles with both interim and final results, allowing journalists to devote more time to post-election analyses and interviews.

This year, just out of curiosity, we decided to briefly use our automated analytical tools to look at the content of the pre-election campaigns. We wanted to see if anything would surprise us. We partnered with NEWTON Media, which provided us with social media posts from the main parties and coalitions competing for voters’ support in this election.

Thanks to this data, we could, for instance, see which parties preferred to talk about foreign policy, defense, and security, and which ones focused more on economic topics — such as energy prices, housing, or the state budget. Of course, we could also flip it around: select a specific party and analyze which themes appeared most often in its communication.

And did anything surprise us? Not really. The rhetoric of political parties didn’t stand out in any unusual way. Perhaps only one thing did: none of the parties paid attention to the conflict in Gaza. Could it really be that this topic doesn’t interest Czech citizens at all?

Take a look for yourself and see if something surprises you. Our press release with the analysis results was cited by Czech news outlets including iDnes.cz, Blesk.cz, and the media-focused website Marketing & Media.

Here’s our full press release:

Prague, October 2025 — Energy, food, and housing prices, along with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, were the dominant themes in this year’s social media communication by Czech political parties. Beyond these issues, priorities diverged: the Pirates emphasized corruption, SPD focused on immigration and the Green Deal, and the ANO movement concentrated its attacks on Prime Minister Petr Fiala’s government. These findings come from a joint analysis by Geneea Analytics and NEWTON Media.

Economy Tops the Agenda

Economic and financial topics were the most frequent subjects on the official social media profiles of political parties — excluding general pre-election messages such as event invitations. The ANO movement and SPD focused on these issues the most, while Stačilo! and STAN discussed them the least. Typical posts addressed energy, housing, and food prices, as well as the state budget.

“The two strongest groups — ANO and the SPOLU coalition — accuse each other of being responsible for rising deficits and prices. It’s clear in the data: one in seven SPOLU posts mentions Andrej Babiš, while every other ANO post refers to Petr Fiala or his government,” says Konstantin Sulimenko, Analyst at Geneea.

Foreign Policy and Defense Gain Ground

Foreign and European affairs and defense ranked second among the most discussed topics, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine taking the lead. SPOLU and SPD emphasized these issues most, while ANO and Motoristé mentioned them only rarely.

“Economic issues traditionally dominate — voters decide with their wallets. But this year, international affairs have also gained weight. ANO finds itself between two millstones: trying to win over voters from more radical parties while not alienating its moderate base. As a result, it largely avoids the highly polarizing Russia–Ukraine debate,” comments Jakub Smutný, Media Analyst at NEWTON Media.

Green Deal Unites — and Divides

Opposition to the Green Deal was one of the few unifying themes across party lines. Some described it as outright harmful (SPD, ANO, Motoristé, Stačilo!), while others called for revisions and compromises (SPOLU, and to a lesser extent STAN).

“Even parties within the current governing coalition hesitate to endorse the Green Deal fully — and they don’t forget to remind voters that Andrej Babiš himself approved it without objections in the past,”
adds Smutný.

Party-Specific Themes

Each party also highlighted its own key issues. ANO most often recalled scandals involving the current government, particularly the bitcoin affair. The Pirates returned to their earlier anti-corruption rhetoric — mentioning corruption in more than 10% of their posts. Immigration was a major topic almost exclusively for SPD, appearing in over a quarter of its posts, while other parties addressed it only sporadically.

“SPD also frequently comments on its own affair — ‘Chirurgové z dovozu’ (‘Imported Surgeons’) — for which it faces trial. No other party mentioned this case on its social media,” notes Sulimenko.

What Parties Ignored

The analysis also revealed topics that received little attention. Health care appeared only occasionally, while education, science, and culture were mentioned even less. Among international issues, the conflict in Gaza barely resonated — unlike the war in Ukraine — with only Stačilo! dedicating a few posts to it.

Additional Findings

  • The F-35 fighter jet purchase was discussed mainly by Stačilo!, which strongly opposes it.
  • Roughly one in every fourteen SPD posts cited economist Lukáš Kovanda.
  • Vladimir Putin was most frequently mentioned by SPOLU, while Donald Trump and Ursula von der Leyen were discussed mainly by SPD.
  • Within the SPOLU coalition, communication strategies varied: TOP 09 focused mainly on the SPOLU brand, KDU-ČSL prioritized its own, and ODS balanced both.
  • Posts with over 1,000 shares came almost exclusively from Stačilo!, while the most commented posts (over 1,000 comments) belonged mainly to SPOLU.

Methodology

The analysis is based on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) posts from official profiles of political parties polling above 5% (according to a STEM survey from September 14, 2025). Between January 1 and September 15, 2025, a total of 6,730 posts were analyzed, each containing at least 20 words. The SPOLU coalition was evaluated as a single entity (ODS, KDU-ČSL, TOP 09, and official SPOLU profiles). The analysis was conducted using AI systems developed by Geneea Analytics.
